Position Summary:


The most important resource an organization has is its people, and the development of these people is crucial to the success of the organization. Supporting (and building) a staff that is engaged and empowered is critical to meeting (and exceeding) goals and measuring performance metrics for the global organization.


Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer the Director of Human Resources will direct and lead  all aspects of the Human Resources operations and the services of the Human Resources Department including Talent Management & Recruiting, Labor Relations, Employee Relations, Training/Education & Development, Compliance, Benefits, Compensation and Performance Management, HRIS, Office Services, HR Legal and Governmental compliance, and Budget areas of responsibility.

This is a remote position from a suitable home office with a private and quiet area to work. Secure internet and reliable phone reception are required. This position requires frequent phone and internet meetings. Certain home office expenses may be reimbursed. A work computer will be provided.


Occasional travel to the Santa Cruz or Oakland offices may be required.


Hours: Full time 40 hours per weekApplicants must be available 40 hours a week, during normal business hours (9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Monday-Friday PST). The exact schedule may be arranged upon hire. Occasional weekend hours may be required with advance arrangement.


Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Human Resources, Industrial Relations or a related field, plus 10 – 15 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience consistent with the required qualifications
  • Extensive and progressively responsible executive-level experience with all facets of human resources including developing and negotiating benefits programs, compensation and performance management, talent management and employee relations
  • Current SPHR or PHR designation or Certification in Organizational Development desired
  • In depth knowledge of employment laws specific to California, FLSA, EEO and FMLA
  • Knowledge of labor relations laws and practices
  • Extensive understanding of Human Resources Strategic issues and challenges
  • Highly developed Senior level management and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate teamwork and staff development
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS system
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills


Position duties:


Employee Experience and Culture:

  • Leads the staff through culture and policy change to reflect the organization’s growth and trajectory.
  • Collaborates on development of internal training (leadership, culture, values) and professional development for employees. This includes any federally mandates trainings such as workplace harassment training.
  • Provides leadership for all employee relations to assess, investigate, mediate, and correct conflict and performance issues
  • Ensures the efficient design and implementation of on-boarding and orientation of all organizational employees to actively engage new employees and ensure a lasting understanding and adherence to the culture, ethics, and expectations of MAPS / MPBC
  • Creates a performance driven culture through the development and implementation of a compensation and performance management philosophy and system that optimizes the resources of the organization and delivers valued, competitive, and cost-effective recognition and reward programs.
  • Coach, motivate, and develop internal stakeholders that have ‘bought in’ to company culture and mission and are dedicated and effective employees



  • Leads in the creation and implementation of progressive initiatives, including talent recruiting and selection, benefits, compensation, training, performance management and reward systems, and employee relations that align the people strategies with the organizational strategies and contribute to a motivated workforce
  • Creates, develops, implements, and evaluates all HR programs and supporting systems to ensure an integrated approach to all systems, practices, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Revise and develop new policies and procedures as needed, keeping HR manual current
  • Assures consistent application and adherence to standards of conduct and performance.
  • Responsible for all employment record keeping and retention, including performance records, Workers Compensation /OSHA and training
  • Consults with Executive staff in establishing strategic direction for Human Resources Function
  • Designs and develops effective succession planning process to ensure management and professional readiness to meet the growth plans of the organization
  • Manage legal area: execute on basic agreements, CDA’s, NDA’s, liaison with outside counsel on more complex agreements, consulting, MSA, service agreements, etc.
  • Manages and directs the HR department, delegating work effectively
  • Oversee all aspects of insurance / benefit brokers, providing information on enrollment and benefits
  • Create policies and SOPS around HR Department workflow and processes


Recruiting and Staffing:

  • Responsible for full-cycle recruiting: managing recruitment and selection activities for all open positions. This will include creating and overseeing processes around job description creation, job posting, candidate screening and interviews, and candidate recommendation to the Senior Leadership Team. 
  • Recruit and maintain strong talent that will build culture at MPBC
  • Follow and adapt the recruitment process, including obtaining job descriptions from hiring managers and following job posting protocol on BambooHR
  • Ensure job description clarity and uniformity for all incoming and veteran staff

  • Communicate and collaborate with key players, internal and external staff
  • Proactively seek methods of improvement, streamlining workflows and building efficiencies in individual work and project outcomes
  • Comfortable using internet applications, Mac and PC operating systems, and Microsoft Office Applications
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated to complete tasks within agreed-upon deadline, ability to communicate clearly about deadlines and expectations
  • Able to manage time well and ask for support when needed
  • Quick learner, excited about learning to use systems in new contexts
  • Able to support the following tools in multiple, pre-specified contexts. Prior experience a plus, some training will be provided: Smartsheet, Zoom, Asana, HRIS (Bamboo)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation:  Salary depends on experience. Includes excellent benefits package.
